Projects in North Dakota

Enbridge has undergone a number of expansion projects to promote North American energy reliability and security of crude petroleum supply. The North Dakota System spans the state and reaches into northeast Montana, and the Lakehead System traverses northeast Pembina County. Now complete and in service as of January 1, 2010, our North Dakota System Expansion Phase 6, or NDSE6, helps to address the transportation needs for the increased crude oil production in North Dakota and Montana.

Throughout construction and operation, these projects have brought economic development to North Dakota through the form of job opportunities and increased tax revenue that will support schools, infrastructure development and other state operations. The Southern Lights LSr Project and the Alberta Clipper Project involved construction of 28 miles of new pipe in North Dakota, and the Southern Lights Diluent Project required the reversal of Enbridge's existing Line 13. The NDSE6 involved completing upgrades at 11 existing pump stations in North Dakota.

The expansion projects in North Dakota include:

  • Southern Lights, a liquid petroleum pipeline from Chicago through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta to bring light hydrocarbons, or “diluents,” to Edmonton for distribution to the oil sands area of northern Alberta. The project also involved the construction of LSr, a new 20-inch crude oil pipeline from Cromer, Manitoba, to Clearbrook, Minn., to replace the capacity of an existing Enbridge line that is being reversed to transport diluent.
  • Alberta Clipper, a new crude oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Superior, Wis., that will increase capacity of our system by 450,000 bpd and later be expandable up to 800,000 bpd. Click here for images related to construction of the Alberta Clipper project.
  • North Dakota System Expansion Phase 6, an expansion of the North Dakota System, referred to as NDSE6, increases pipeline capacity from 110,000 bpd to approximately 161,000 bpd of delivery capacity into the Enbridge Clearbrook Terminal in Clearbrook, Minn. NDSE6 was placed into service on January 1, 2010.
