Enbridge is proposing a number of expansion projects to support the growth and development of the Canadian oil sands and promote a North American solution to energy reliability and security of crude petroleum supply. The expansion projects in Manitoba include:
- Southern Lights, a liquid petroleum pipeline from Chicago through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta to bring light hydrocarbons, or “diluents,” to Edmonton for distribution to the oil sands area of northern Alberta. The project also involves the construction of LSr, a new 20-inch crude oil pipeline from Cromer, Manitoba, to Clearbrook, Minn., to replace the capacity of an existing Enbridge line that is being reversed to transport diluent. Construction is complete on Southern Lights in Manitoba.
- Alberta Clipper, a new crude oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Superior, Wis. to increase capacity of our system by 450,000 barrels per day (bpd) and later be expandable up to 800,000 bpd.
Because Southern Lights shares the same right-of-way as Alberta Clipper, final remediation will take place in 2010 when both projects are finished so as to reduce environmental impacts as much as possible.
Throughout construction and operation, these projects will bring economic development to Manitoba through the form of job opportunities and increased tax revenue that will support schools, infrastructure development and other provincial operations.
