Enbridge is proposing three expansion projects in Illinois to support the growth and development of the Canadian oil sands and help ensure a North American solution to energy reliability and security of crude petroleum supply. The expansion projects in Illinois include:
-
Southern Access Expansion, an expansion of Enbridge’s existing pipeline system, including new pipeline in Wisconsin and Illinois, to increase access by Chicago-area and Midwestern refineries to a growing supply of crude oil supplies produced in Alberta’s oil sands, as well as Montana and North Dakota.
-
Southern Lights, a petroleum pipeline from Chicago through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta to bring light hydrocarbons, or “diluents,” to Edmonton for distribution to the oil sands area of northern Alberta.
-
Southern Access Extension, will extend Enbridge’s expanded system from Flanagan, Ill., in Livingston County to Patoka, Ill., in Marion County to increase access by additional Illinois and Midwestern refineries to a growing supply of crude oil supplies produced in Alberta oil sands, as well as Montana and North Dakota.
Southern Access and Southern Lights will involve construction in Illinois.
Throughout construction and operation, these projects will bring economic development to communities through the form of job opportunities and purchases before, during and after pipeline construction.
